BEAVER SPORTS NOTES: Nelson Posts Top-10 Finish In Golf; Women’s Soccer Lands In National Top 15

Brandon Nelson’s three-round score of 4-under, 209 was good for sixth place as part of Bemidji State men’s golf’s appearance at the two-day NSU Classic. Plus, the Beaver women’s soccer team has raced into the national Top 25 for the first time this season. BSU sports news and notes for Tuesday, Sep. 21:

Men’s Golf

Bemidji State finished 13th out of 18 teams at the Northeastern State Men’s Golf Classic in Muskogee, OK on Monday and Tuesday. The team finished with a three-round score of 885 (291-294-300).

Senior Brandon Nelson’s three-round score of 209 (4-under par) was a career-low score and good enough to finish in 6th place individually. Nelson’s efforts also earned him NSIC Men’s Golfer of the Week honors on Wednesday.

Koby Kuenzel and Jack Southard each posted scores of 223 to tie for 55th place overall.

BSU will next be at the J.R. Watkins Invitational in Lake City on Sep. 27-28.

Women’s Golf

The Beaver women’s golf team finished in 9th place out of nine teams at the Golden Bear Classic at the Keller Golf Course in Maplewood on Monday and Tuesday. Their final team score was 706 (357-349).

Sophomore Mollie Albrecht had a team-best finish in a tie for 26th place, carding a 23-over, 167 for the event.

Their next event will be the Mustang Invite in Marshall on Sep. 25-26.

Despite putting together a strong push in the third and fourth sets, Bemidji State volleyball fell to #23 St. Cloud State 3-1 (25-9, 25-13, 23-25, 25-22) on Tuesday evening at the BSU Gymnasium.

A late rally helped Bemidji State capture the narrow third set, but they could not repeat the feat in the fourth after seizing a late 21-20 lead.

Anna Averkamp’s 15 kills were the best tally for the home team, while she also provided five aces. Emily Wade totaled 38 assists in the loss.

The Beavers drop to 0-11 and will travel to Augustana on Friday before playing #8 Wayne State on Saturday.

Women’s Soccer

The 5-0 Beavers have landed in the United Soccer Coaches Division II women’s soccer top 25 for the first time since the 2019 preseason poll, holding the #15 rank in the county as of Tuesday.

BSU is the only NSIC team in the top 25, and are currently also ranked second in the newest Central Region poll that is used to determine NCAA tournament berths.

National recognition has also landed on forward Sara Wendt, who is currently tied for the top goalscoring mark in all of Division II with eight goals.

The Beavers will travel this weekend for high-profile games with Minnesota State on Friday and Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday.
