Bemidji State & WCHA Shut Down Remainder Of Conference Tourney

The WCHA followed the lead of the NCAA and other conferences and has announced the cancellation of the remainder of the WCHA tournament. Here is the press release from Bemidji State’s Sports Information Office:

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Following the lead of the NCAA as well as the recommendation of local and state health officials regarding COVID-19, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association has cancelled the remainder of the 2019-20 season, which includes the WCHA Playoff semifinal best-of-three series between Bemidji State University and Bowling Green State University originally scheduled for Sanford Center March 13-15.

“In light of the current health issue gripping the nation, we are cancelling the remainder of the WCHA Postseason.” WCHA President and Men’s League Commissioner Bill Robertson said. “The health and safety of our student-athletes as well as our coaches, officials, fans, institutional and league staff is our top priority. Over the last several days we have discussed options for continuing the competition but at the end of the day, we felt it was best for all concerned to end the season immediately.”

Fans who purchased tickets for any of the WCHA Playoff semifinal games in Bemidji, Minn. will be able to obtain ticket refunds. Those who purchased online through Ticketmaster can have purchase price refunded back to credit or debit cards. Fans who purchased tickets at athletic venues, such as the Sanford Center box office, must return to that location to obtain a refund.

All decisions have been made in an attempt ensure the safety of student-athletes, coaches, administrators, fans and media. BSU, in consultation with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, the NSIC and WCHA, will continue to monitor all relevant information regarding COVID-19 to make any further decisions regarding future athletic events.
