GIRLS SOCCER: Bemidji Marches Past Hillcrest Into Monday Quarterfinal

Seven different Lumberjacks scored goals as Section 8A North #3 Bemidji ousted #6 Hillcrest Lutheran 8-0 Thursday night in rainy conditions at Chet Anderson Stadium in a Section 8A second round match.

Lindsey Hildenbrand scored in each half and set up Sam Hansen and Liberty Dickerson for Bemidji’s opening two goals in the 10th and 16th minutes. Katie Alto scored late in a four-goal first half for Bemidji and Alexis Paquette, Aliya Berard, and Lauren Berg each added goals in the second half. Abby Kieson (2 saves) and Anna Garrigan (0 saves) split the shutout in goal for the Lumberjacks.

The two-time defending Section 8A champions will now travel to face North #2 Alexandria in a Monday quarterfinal at 4pm. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but moved due to snowy conditions for both of the North quarterfinal games.

It was a senior-to-senior connection that opened the scoring for Bemidji in the 10th minute as a long switch from Hildenbrand found Hansen, whose effort from distance put the Lumberjacks in front.

Six minutes later, Hildenbrand was the creator for Bemidji’s second goal, as her cutback pass found Dickerson trailing into the penalty area.

Hildenbrand got in on the goalscoring act herself in the 20th minute, striking low underneath Comets goalkeeper Juliana Undseth for her 14th goal of the season.

With seconds remaining in the first half, centerback Jenna Jones swung in a corner kick that got past Undseth to the run of Alto, who volleyed in a first-time finish to complete the first half scoring.

Jones picked up her second assist early in the second half, as she found Paquette in space at the top of the 18-yard box for a turn and finish.

Hildenbrand capped her night with an outstanding flick past a defender before racing through to convert past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Just a few minutes later, Berard and Berg combined at the top of the 18 to work past the Comets backline, with Berard finishing a tap-in at the end of the attack.

Berg won a penalty kick shortly thereafter as she was obstructed just inside the 18-yard box after making a run into the area. Although her spot kick was saved, she fired the rebound into the roof of the net to wrap the scoring.
