HIGHLIGHTS: Bemidji Rumbles To Triangular Sweep Of Tech, Fergus

Bemidji wrestling used its collective strength in depth to roll to victories of 51-20 against St. Cloud Tech and 67-10 over Fergus Falls in a triangular Friday evening at the Bemidji High School Fieldhouse.

The victories came only one day after Bemidji had split a triangular visit to Browerville, but the Lumberjacks stayed fresh by giving a variety of wrestlers a chance to see the mat–an opportunity that many seized.

Bemidji signaled its intent quickly against Tech, with three consecutive pins from Brody Castonguay (106 lbs), Gavin Osborn (113), and Alec Newby (120) staking the Lumberjacks to an 18-0 start to the match in order.

Coy Olson halted a run of back-to-back technical falls for the Tigers with a 2-1 decision in a marathon 4OT match at 138 lb, which set up a fall victory for Dane Jorgensen at 145.

Olson’s overtime victory also started a run of seven consecutive Lumberjack wins. Thade Osborn took a 12-5 decision at 152 lb, and pins from Seth Newby (160) and unbeaten Hoyt Solum (170) further stretched out the advantage.

Owen Seitz notched a decision at 182 and Colton Hinrichs concluded Bemidji’s scoring for the match with a rapid :28 fall at 195 lb.

The Fergus Falls match offered an opportunity for several Lumberjacks to cycle in for some varsity action, but the opening to the match was still familiar. Gabriel Morin, Hunter Heim, and Alec Newby all were victorious by pin to start Bemidji in the same vein as it had against Tech.

Three consecutive wins by forfeit further enhanced Bemidji’s margin immediately after. Noah Leffelman took a decision at 145 lb, Owen Lundeed added a major decision at 160, and Logan Willard provided yet another victory by fall at 170.

The match was bookended by yet another trio of Bemidji pins, this time from Nate Schwinghammer (195), Jared Frenzel (220), and Dylan Headbird to close it out at 285 lb.

Bemidji improves to 13-1 overall with the victories and will next square off with Alexandria and Willmar on the road in Alex on Tuesday.
