HIGHLIGHTS: Fast Start Wiped Out For BHS Boys In Roseau

A goal from Ethan Maish just 3:07 into the hockey game staked Bemidji boys hockey to a quick lead, but Roseau responded with six unanswered scores on the way to a 9-3 win in both teams’ season opener Thursday evening at the Roseau Memorial Arena.

Maish’s opening tally came off a quick transition up ice, with his fellow senior captains Tate Hammitt and Grant Declusin setting up the opportunity.

The lead did not last long, as Thor Byfuglien answered back just 34 seconds later before Tyler Bjerk and Isaac Wensloff would add further goals in the 1st period to put the Rams ahead for good.

Three further goals from last season’s Section 8AA runner-up followed midway through the second period to explode the advantage to 6-1. Nathan Alto responded off his own rebound to pull a goal back at 10:24 of the second.

Gavin Gunderson scored twice in quick succession–including scoring on the powerplay on his second–to further extend Roseau’s lead to 8-2.

Maish once again showcased his speed with less than a minute left in the second to pick up his second goal of the night. Hammitt chipped a clearance to center ice, allowing the quick center to dart past everybody and finish under Roseau goaltender Andrew Tuttle on the breakaway.

Paul Huglen wrapped up the scoring for Roseau with a late powerplay goal in the 3rd period.

Shots stood 28-24 in favor of Roseau, as Bemidji’s Tanner Rebischke made 19 saves in defeat.

The Lumberjacks will return to the road on Saturday for a trip to Delano. Gametime is slated for 2pm with pregame at 1:45 on KBUN-FM 104.5 and KBUN1 at kbunsportsradio.com.
