A nine-point scoring output in the first half from Bemidji boys basketball proved costly as the Lumberjacks fell to a 50-28 loss to Brainerd in a low-scoring Friday night affair at the Bemidji High School Fieldhouse.
A brief early lead for the home team was secured on a bucket from Isaac Severts during a tight opening to the night.
Brainerd countered with a mini-run to go in front before Trevor Rohder answered with a triple to make it 9-7 Warriors.
Bemidji would go the next eight minutes without a single point, while Brainerd edged out to a 12-0 run and 21-7 lead. James Williams finally ended the run with the final make of the half for the Lumberjacks.
Trailing 23-9 at halftime, Bemidji started the second half with a make from Sam Wilson and later a field goal from Gavin Luksik that helped create a small 6-0 burst in the Lumberjacks’ favor.
But the lead garnered by the Warriors was never seriously threatened throughout the second half, as they pushed the advantage over 20 late in the proceedings.
Bemidji’s record drops to 5-10 and the Lumberjacks will be the #6 seed in the upcoming Section 8AAA playoffs. They will travel to #3 Sartell-St. Stephen on Friday evening for a 7pm quarterfinal, with pregame at 6:45 on KBUN-FM 104.5 and KBUN1 at kbunsportsradio.com.
