LUMBERJACK BOYS & GIRLS NORDIC SKIING
The Lumberjack Boys had one of their best days ever at the State Nordic Ski meet Friday at Giant’s Ridge. Nick Youso of the Lumberjacks took 14th individually, the highest finish since Justin Hayes took 10th in 1999, according to the Bemidji Pioneer. Youso led the way as the Jacks took 8th as a team, finishing in the top half for the first time since they were 4th in an 8 team field back in 2007, again according to The Pioneer. Logan Jensen took 24th, so he and Youso both took All State honors individually, the first time that’s happened since 1999 when the Hayes Brothers, Justin and Chris, both cracked the top 25.

On Thursday, Junior Mary Beth Mathews made her third straight appearance in the state Nordic Ski Meet at Giant’s Ridge in Biwabik and took 49th out of 158. Sophomore Ella Simula made her state meet debut and finished 96th.

LUMBERJACK BOYS SWIMMING & DIVING
The Lumberjack Boys Swimmers earned five spots in the state meet and the Jacks took 3rd in the Section 5A meet with Sartell-St. Stephen defending their Section title and Alexandria taking 2nd. It was one of the Jacks best showings in a number of years. The top three swimmers and/or relays earn spots in the state meet. You can also qualify if you beat the state qualifying mark.

The 400 Free and 200 Free Relay teams both qualified for state by finishing 3rd. The 400 Free quartet featured Brooks Matetich, Moses Son, Jaxon Leindecker and Walker Erickson. The 200 Free team members are Erickson, Quinn Knott, Ben Dockendorf and Aidan Wolf. Matetich also finished second in the 100 Fly and qualified for state in the 50 Free. Though he was fourth, he beat the state qualifying mark by .02 seconds. With the relay, he’ll be competing in three events at state. Son also qualified in the 100 Fly by beating the qualifying standard making him a double qualifier. Erickson is also competing twice in the two relays.

On Thursday, Lumberjack Senior Aiden Saari took second in diving, qualifying for the state meet for a second straight year.

The state meet will be at the University of Minnesota Thursday through Saturday. Saari will be diving Thursday night at 6pm. The swimming portion will be divided and timed like the Section meet. The Section 1,3 and 5 swimmers will go Saturday at noon.
