Name Game: “Lumberjacks”, “Drakes”, “Greyhounds” In The Field For MSHSL Nickname Challenge

Minnesota State High School League writer John Millea has crafted a bracket challenge to celebrate the wide world of state school nicknames. Three area schools–Bemidji, Blackduck, and Fosston–are represented in the field with their nicknames.

Millea and the league have launched the 2020 MSHSL Nickname Challenge, a tournament-style bracket compiling the 64 best high school nicknames in the state. Public voting of each matchup on Millea’s Twitter account is determining which nickname advances. The first round is currently in progress this week, with a different region of voting each day.

The region names themselves have a unique twist, as they have been dubbed the “Pretzel & Cheese”, “#ThankARef”, “Pork Chop”, and “#BeTheLightMN” regions to reflect either an MSHSL hashtag or one of Millea’s favorite press box foods.

The Greyhounds–represented by Fosston, Duluth East, and New Ulm Cathedral–advanced in the Pretzel & Cheese region on Monday with 51.5% of the vote against the region’s #5 seed International Falls Broncos. They will next be in a vote against the #4 Elk River Elks next week.

Voting is taking place today through tomorrow morning in the Pork Chop region, where the unseeded Lumberjacks of Bemidji and Cloquet are facing the region’s #3 seed Perham Yellowjackets.

#BeTheLightMN region voting will take place Thursday through Friday morning, including the region’s #5 seed Blackduck Drakes against the Two Harbor Agates.
